Backup & Export
What it is
A single button that packages up everything that makes your site your site — every article, page, and project, your categories and tags, your media library, and your settings — into one downloadable file you can keep somewhere safe, entirely separate from your web host.
Why it matters
Hosting problems happen — a bad update, a server issue, an accidental deletion, a host that goes down entirely. None of those are things you can always prevent, but having a recent backup sitting on your own computer (or in your own cloud storage) means none of them are catastrophic either. It's the kind of thing that costs a few minutes and matters enormously exactly once, on the one day you actually need it.
How to create a backup
Open Tools → Backup & Export (available to Admin accounts) and click Create Full Backup. It builds and downloads a single file — keep a copy somewhere other than the server itself, so a problem with your hosting can't take out your backup along with everything else.
How to restore your site from a backup file
Upload a previously downloaded backup file on the same page, and SynaptikCMS takes over from there. Before it changes anything, it automatically saves a snapshot of your site exactly as it is right now — so if the restore itself doesn't go the way you expected, you can restore that snapshot in turn and undo it.
Restoring replaces your current content and settings with whatever's inside the uploaded file. The automatic safety snapshot means a restore is never truly a one-way door, but the restore itself does take effect immediately — make sure you're uploading the backup you actually mean to.
Every backup you've created, along with those automatic safety snapshots, is listed on this same page for as long as you want to keep them — download or delete any of them whenever you like, no separate file access needed.
