Building Your Navigation Menu

Your navigation menu is the map visitors use to get around your site — get it right and people find what they came for; get it wrong and even your best content goes unread. Appearance → Edit Menu is where you control it.

Two ways to build it

By default, SynaptikCMS builds your menu automatically from whichever content you've marked "show in menu" while writing it — no setup required, and it stays current as you publish new pages. You can choose whether it lists everything flat or groups it by content type, and whether it's sorted alphabetically, by date, or in an order you set by hand.

If you want more control than that — a specific order, sections that don't map to a single content type, links to somewhere outside your site — flip on Use custom menu, and the automatic menu steps aside entirely in favor of what you build yourself below.

Building a custom menu

Add two kinds of items:

• A link to your own content — pick any article, page, project, or a whole content-type listing (like "All Articles"), and the menu keeps the link correct even if that page's address changes later.
• A custom link — any URL at all, including links to other websites.

Drag items to put them in the order you want, or drag one on top of another to tuck it underneath as a drop-down — up to two levels deep, so you can group related links without the menu sprawling sideways. Any item can also be set to open in a new tab, handy for links leading away from your site.

Saving

Changes take effect the moment you save — there's no publishing step separate from the rest of your site.
